DSNY’s implementation of the new Commercial Waste Zoning Law (Local Law 199) in the Brooklyn South zone is currently in progress: January 1 – February 28, 2026.

What you need to know about CWZ implementation in the Brooklyn South zone:

Between January 1, 2026 through February 28, 2026 all commercial establishments operating in the Brooklyn South Zone will be required by Rule to contract with an authorized hauler in their zone for waste and recycling services (visit www.nyc.gov/cwz for program information and authorized haulers).

After February 28th, if you have not signed a new contract with an authorized hauler under the CWZ program, the DSNY will assign your business to an authorized hauler at the maximum legal rates.

What DSNY assignment means for your business:

The DSNY will select a hauler for your business with service beginning March 1, 2026.

Per the NYC rules, your assigned hauler is required to service your business at the minimum levels of collection, two times per week for trash and once per week for recycling.

Under assignment, you will be charged the highest legal rate for every single service instance.

DO NOT RISK ASSIGNMENT – It may cost your business $100s or $1,000s more per month.
